Hook Us Up!

If I’ve said it once, I have said it a million times: “the three Cs in skating have to match and they are Concept, Costuming and Choreography.”.

The costumes hang on the musical and choreography hooks in synchronized skating

I want to look out on the ice and have a hint about what is to come and that starts with the costume. For synchronized skaters, this is particularly important. Once the music starts, I want to be transported to another place with costuming and choreography that are a seamless integration with the concept and the music.

It must be interesting work for coaches to be able to come up with new material season after season. For Director of Skyliners SST and Head Coach Josh Babb, it comes out this way: “In order of importance for me, I see music and the choreography as the most important followed by the costuming.”

Babb continues, “I feel music is the most important when building a program for the team. You need to choose something they can relate to a portray a true character. The choreography is equally important. You need to create a program that embraces the music and continues to build on the character. When choreographing I let the music tell me where the elements should be.”

Like the cherry on top of a skating sundae: “The costume should compliment both music and choreography. Costuming is like putting a period on a sentence. Buttons up the whole package,” offered Josh.

Dress Wright Synchro’s owner and chief designer Deanna Wright says: “I would be stating the obvious to say that the sky’s the limit when it comes to creating a unique look for a team with their costumes. All you need is a clear idea of the coach’s vision which can start for me if I get the chance to hear the music.”

Clarity of purpose and vision in the costuming can only help enhance the goal of the programs

Synchronize Your Watch

Choosing this video was a complete no brainer. I located the short program from Mozart Cup 2018, where Finland’s Sun City Junior team performed their Michael Jackson routine in costumes by Dress Wright Synchro. The minute the skaters hit their position and even before seeing the music, I knew what I was in for.

Team Up! with Dress Wright Synchro: Deanna says that a concept dress is a great place to start if you are looking to express a theme. Check out our catalogue here (pages 16 – 30) for our selection of dresses and our gallery for what teams have chosen in their moment to shine competitively.
