To keep you on the cutting edge, we've got lots of news from the world of blades! Watch for information about skates in next months issue! "Good News"! Guide to
Blades Different types of blades are designed for specific uses, depending on the type of skating -freestyle/all purpose, dance, synchro (hockey and speed skating). The basic differences are determined by the size and placement of the toe picks, shape of the curvature of the rocker, length of the blade (from front to back) and the width of the blade. Freestyle blades have more accessible toe picks than dance blades. The toe pick is used to assist in toe jumps. The top pick helps stabilize the take off of the jump, so the skater can achieve enough height to rotate the jump. The bottom pick is the last thing to leave the ice and first thing to make contact with the ice when landing jumps: it is also used to help set spins. Just like skates, there are different qualities of blades by each of the manufacturers. In the past our primary blade choices have been from Wilson or MK. However, with improved technology and competition, Ultima and ISE blades are using new technology and engineering to make them as good or better, Canadian made and more economical for the consumer!
