Summer Training Check List    By Linda Arnold

As school comes to an end anxious parents think of creative ways to keep their kids busy for the summer. With today’s focus on keeping children active Summer Skating Schools provide the perfect solution. Skating schools supply the perfect forum for physical activity and opportunities to socialize with their peers. To help make their summer training a positive experience we have provided a checklist.

  • Prior to the start of their session sit down with your child and review their timetable for the week, month ahead. Make sure to review what they need to be doing on their breaks (i.e. skates off, change, eat snack) Type/copy the time table and place in your child’s skating bag for future reference.

  • Set a budget and communicate with your Coach your expectations for lesson time, skills and dance requirements.  Discuss choreography where needed and establish which summer competitions (if any) your child will be attending.  To avoid disappointment make sure the forms are filed well in advance of entry deadlines. If your child is attending a summer competition make sure you source a competition outfit well in advance.  If they are wearing one from the previous season check for comfort and fit well before the time it is required.  You don’t want any last minute surprises!  Confirm the schedule with your child and the Coach/Coaches they may be working with.  Record their lesson time on your child’s schedule.

  • Make sure your child understands where you will be during their sessions and provide phone numbers where you can be reached if necessary. (Cell/home/ work).

  • Where possible arrange for an older skater to assist your younger skater with tying their skates, keeping to their schedule, guidance, etc.

  • Well in advance make sure your child’s skates are sharpened and in good repair. (i.e. New laces?).  Check the fit to make sure they will be comfortable for the duration of the summer.

  • Provide quick and easy nutritious snacks for your skater to re-energize in between ice and off ice sessions. Purchase a fun lunch bag big enough to accommodate a freezer pack, several drinks, fresh fruit, granola mix, sandwiches, etc.

  • For girls skating attire in the summer changes to light weight summer skirts/ dresses in fun, vibrant colors and leg warmers to keep limbs low to the ice warm. Most schools prefer skaters change to t shirts and shorts for off ice programs.  It is good to pack several pairs of tights so skaters have a dry pair to wear for their second skating session.  And wash the tights regularly!!

  • We haven’t forgotten the boys!  Dress Wright On Ice provides boys wear on a made to order basis with a 2 - 3 week delivery time.  We have popular styles for both practice and competition.  Please visit the boys section on our website for further information.

  • Remember the expression all work and no play.  Balance is key!  Try and make sure at least once every few weeks you plan for your skater to have a friend over or arrange an outing with some of their friends.  A ˝ day trip to Wonderland, seeing a movie, visiting a local water park are all great ideas and help make for the perfect summer!

So remember to …Plan, Prepare, Participate and Play!  Have a Great Summer!

Summer Skate     Care Tip

  1. Don’t leave your skates in the hot car.  It’s not good for the leather to have to undergo such extreme temperatures.
  2. Open your skate bag when you get your skates home, to ensure skates have a chance to “air” – we don’t want to be smelly like “those hockey guys!!”
  3. Wash your tights regularly – or better yet – have a few pair to wear so you’re not doing laundry every day!  Remember we offer a frequent buyer card – buy 9 get one free of equal or the lesser value.

If you’re not skating this summer, remember to store your skates in a dry, well-ventilated area.  Moisture from basements, humidity and air conditioning can all affect the amount of rust that might accumulate on your blades.  Protect your investment!

To avoid any inconvenience, please call (905-282-1555) ahead for a skate fitting appointment.                     Skate sharpening will be available Monday – Friday 10 – 5 but not on the weekends

Good Luck, Skate Hard - 'tll nexttime!
