April 2002 Edition

Getting the Boot!
Buying new skate boots is almost as challenging as breaking them in! Whether this is your first or 20th pair, you still have to determine which boots are best for you. It is important to consider your height and weight, skill level, how frequently you skate, your age, and the size and shape of your foot

There are many makes and models of skates and skate boots, with a full complement of price ranges to match. Some of the less expensive models have the blade attached and are designed for the more occasional skater or those developing their basic skating skills. Make sure the boots have enough support for the skill level of the skater without over booting.

As you progress in ability, separate boots and blades will help customize your individual needs. The cut and fit of the boot varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some boots such as SP-Terri, Jackson and Risport have wider toe boxes. Others such as WIFA, Risport have European-style higher heels. The arches are highest in Harlick and SP-Terri boots and lower in Riedells. Try on as many different makes as possible.

Stock boots are made in predetermined sizes. Some manufacturers also offer a great selection of widths. Heat moldable boots such as Jackson and Graff have drastically reduced the need for custom cut boots.

If you've bought boots before and you haven't had problems with the fit or your feet, there may not be a reason to change manufacturers, although you may want to move up to a higher level boot as you skating ability progresses. Problems that warrant making a change can include heel spurs, corns, bunions, arch problems and poor fit.

Your skates are your only piece of equipment: they must be comfortable, fit properly and provide enough support to accomplish the skills you are working on. They will make a world of difference in your enjoyment of this great sport and your success. Skates should always be tried on in person, under the supervision of people who know how to fit skates well. Blades should be mounted and sharpened by a knowledgeable person.

For more information about blades, please check out our March 2002 issue. In upcoming issues we will share more information about fitting, breaking in new skates and sharpening!

NEW ARRIVALS

Yes, it's the end of one skating season but Spring/Summer skating also brings on the new styles of dresses and clothing! Look for some new pastel colours like butter yellow, peppermint, ballet pink and lavender. We'll start to get new styles up over the next few months, with our biggest change over happening in June.

April Showers bring…
Ice Shows and Carnivals!

For many clubs, April is the time of year to bring out the fancy costumes, pile on the sequins and big smiles because "It's SHOW Time!"

For skaters, don't forget to clean and polish your skates and put in some new laces. You should be sure to have your skate guards, handy. And don't forget that good pair of skating tights (the ones without any wholes!)

And above all, please remember to give a special "thank you" the all those coaches, skating club executives and parent volunteers who have contributed countless hours and sleepless nights to make the whole show come together!

Have fun!

Summer Hours!
May, June and July will have new summer hours so be sure to check back in with us for the latest update.
