How to Find A Club         by PJ Kwong

Maybe you or your child has already completed a course of lessons in a beginner program, and you have decided that figure skating is for you.  What next? Time to find a figure skating club.

There are a number of things to consider when looking for a club, and the easiest thing to do is to start out by making a list of the things that you are after.  Does your child show a lot of promise, and you think that competitive figure skating is what is in the cards. Perhaps you or your child has seen synchro skating, and you are looking for a club with a strong focus in that area.  Of course, there is a lot to be said for simply learning new skills, making new friends and developing a sense of accomplishment in pride in a job well done.

Once you know what kind of club appeals to you, head for the computer and see what you can find by searching for skating clubs in your area.  I would then visit whatever clubs may be geographically attractive, and watch what goes on.  Things that you may want to watch for are the (hopefully happy and focused) looks on the skaters’ faces, whether the coaches seem engaged in their task, and if there seems to be interested parents around.  Talk to the parents and get a feel for their experiences and what they like about “their” club. I would also get a copy of the club brochure to get a feel for the coaches and their qualifications, the ice-time schedule, and any volunteering or fundraising commitments.

Once your decision is made…have the time of your life…I know I did, and that a great many of my very best friends are from the skating world.
